Data Privacy at Coinbase

Protecting your data and your privacy are a key priority for Coinbase. That’s why we keep you informed of how and why we collect, use, protect, and disclose your personal information, focusing on consumer choice and control.

The Global Privacy Policy covers Individual, Cloud, and Institutional services.  

NFT, Commerce, and Wallet services are covered under different policies, which can be found here.  

  • The Privacy Policy has been updated to provide further transparency about how we collect, use, and disclose customer data, including information about services and features that we launched since our last update.

  • We have also simplified the structure and layout of the Privacy Policy in order to make it easier to navigate.  

  • The Privacy Policy has also been updated to better describe your rights and how you can exercise them. 

While the Privacy Policy may look different, these updates don’t allow Coinbase to collect, use, or share your data in new ways.

We strive to collect only the data that's necessary for our services. This includes basic customer and identification information such as name, address, and government ID cards, as well as financial and transactional information necessary to enable and validate transactions.

At Coinbase, we use your personal information to:

  • Create and maintain your Coinbase account and provide you with our customer support

  • Ensure the safety, security, and integrity of our services

  • Comply with our legal and regulatory obligations (such as to determine your legal eligibility for certain regulated products and respond to valid regulatory and law-enforcement requests)

  • Customize and improve our services

  • Provide you with marketing communications and promotions

The Coinbase company responsible for the handling of your personal information is the entity named in the User Agreement you agree to when you sign up to receive our Services. For more information, see Section 11. Our Relationship with You.

Consumer choice and control are important to us. You can make privacy rights requests, including requests to access your information, by signing in to your account and going to your Privacy Rights Dashboard.

If you are unable to sign in to your account or cannot access the Privacy Rights Dashboard, you can contact us.

You may request deletion of some of your data without impacting your access to Coinbase Services. This data includes marketing and communication data, referrals, and survey responses.

Note that if you request deletion of data that we collect for legal or identity verification purposes, you may be required to close your account and withdraw funds from the Coinbase platform.

To exercise your deletion rights, please sign in to your account and visit your Privacy Rights Dashboard. This must be done from a web browser.

Coinbase may retain some of your personal information as needed to provide our services or to comply with our legal obligations, as outlined in our Privacy Policy.

You can exercise your rights under the CCPA by logging into your account and going to your Privacy Rights DashboardIf you wish to opt-out of the sharing of your personal information for advertising purposes, you may do so in the Privacy Rights Dashboard by toggling off the “Share My Personal Info with third party partners for Advertising” control.

We disclose your information to other Coinbase companies, as well as trusted third parties and service providers, in order to offer and promote our Services, and to fulfill legal requirements, including responding to valid requests from regulators, law enforcement authorities and government agencies.  To learn more, read Section 3. We do not sell our customers’ personal information. 

We do share personal information with third party partners for advertising purposes. If you wish to opt-out of this sharing, you may do so by visiting the Privacy Rights Dashboard and toggling off the “Share My Personal Info with third party partners for Advertising” control.

Coinbase employs a range of technical and organizational measures to defeat efforts to intercept, surveil, or otherwise access without authorization data in transit. For instance, Coinbase encrypts all confidential data transfers to prevent interception or tampering of that data by unauthorized third parties. 

No. In accordance with our User Agreement and other applicable terms of service, the Sites and Services are not directed to persons under the age of 18, and we do not knowingly request or collect any information about persons under the age of 18. If you are under the age of 18, please do not provide any personal information through the Sites or Services. If we become aware a User or Customer submitting personal information is younger than 18 years of age, Coinbase will require the relevant Customer or User to close his or her account, and will take steps to delete the individual’s information as soon as possible.
